Celebrating Women in Construction: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures

Celebrating Women in Construction: Breaking Barriers and Building Futures

As 2024 Women in Construction Week unfolds, it’s an opportune moment to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of women in an industry traditionally dominated by men. From the bustling offices to the gritty construction sites, women are leaving an indelible mark, challenging stereotypes, and forging pathways for future generations. In this celebration, we not only acknowledge the women laboring on jobsites and operating heavy machinery but also those behind the scenes, tirelessly supporting those in the field.

A Career of Possibilities for Women

For women considering a career in construction, the opportunities are boundless. Whether you’re drawn to the thrill of designing architectural marvels, managing multimillion-dollar projects, or mastering specialized trades, the construction industry offers a myriad of pathways for growth and fulfillment. There has never been a better time for women to carve out their place in this dynamic field.

Women Leadership: Breaking the Glass Ceiling

In an industry where leadership roles have historically been occupied by men, women are increasingly ascending to positions of authority. Their leadership brings diverse perspectives, innovative solutions, and a commitment to fostering inclusive work environments. By breaking through barriers, these trailblazing women are not only proving their mettle but also inspiring the next generation of female leaders in construction.

Tradeswomen: Shattering Stereotypes, Building Dreams

The sight of women donning hard hats and work boots on construction sites is becoming increasingly common, challenging entrenched stereotypes about gender roles in manual labor. These tradeswomen are exemplars of resilience, skill, and determination, proving that gender is no barrier to success in the construction industry. Through their grit and expertise, they are dismantling outdated perceptions and paving the way for a more inclusive workforce.

The Backbone of Construction: Our Support Staff

While the spotlight often gravitates towards the physical labor on construction sites, it’s essential to recognize the vital role played by our support staff in the office. From project managers to estimators, administrative assistants to HR professionals, these individuals are the unsung heroes ensuring the smooth operation of every project. Their organizational skills, attention to detail, and strategic planning are the bedrock upon which successful construction ventures are built.

Building the Future: Diversity as Strength

As we look ahead, it’s evident that a diversified workforce is crucial for the continued growth and success of the construction industry. With the demand for skilled labor steadily increasing, embracing diversity isn’t just a moral imperative—it’s a strategic advantage. By harnessing the collective talents of individuals from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, we fortify our capacity to tackle complex challenges and deliver exceptional results.

Core Values: Guiding Principles for Success

Our Core Values of Safety First, Act with Integrity, Build Trust, Teamwork, Constantly Learn, and Strive for Excellence are not only foundational principles for success in the construction industry but also essential tenets that resonate deeply with women in the workforce. By prioritizing safety, integrity, and trust, women contribute to creating inclusive and supportive environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to excel. Embracing teamwork and a commitment to continuous learning, women leverage their unique perspectives and skills to drive innovation and foster collaboration, while their relentless pursuit of excellence sets the standard for quality and professionalism in every endeavor. These core values not only guide our actions but also inspire women to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and lead the way towards a more diverse and successful future in construction.

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week, let us reaffirm our dedication to fostering an inclusive and empowering environment for women in the construction industry. Here’s to the women who are shaping the present and defining the future of construction—one brick, one beam, one breakthrough at a time.

MBC Caring Culture

Statistics reveal that mental health is a real issue in our society and industry. MBC Holdings has launched an initiative to create a caring culture where an individual can recognize his or her full potential, can cope with the stress of a normal life, and can be a productive and fruitful member of their community.

At this year’s Winter Field Leadership Training Day, Cal Beyer, CWP, SCTPP will speak on mental health. Beyer is Vice President of Workforce Risk & Worker Wellbeing for Holmes Murphy & Associates. While working for a heavy/highway and paving contractor in the Pacific Northwest, he launched the mental health and suicide prevention movement in the US construction industry in 2014. He serves on the Executive Commitee of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention; the Expert Advisory Groups for Mindwise Innovations and Youturn Health, and the Lived Experience Advisory Committee of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center.

Beyer was instrumental in the formation of the Construction Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Engineering News-Record (ENR) recognized him as a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016. The National Association of Home Builders presented him with an award for mental health industry advocacy in 2022. He is a frequent presenter at national construction conferences and frequent contributor to construction industry publications.

Beyer will be presenting on these two topics during our Winter Field Leadership Training Day:

Shining Light on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention in Construction
Mental Health is an invisible crisis in construction. Nationally in the construction industry, more workers die annually by suicide than by all occupational injuries combined. The session focuses on WHY these topics are an imperative for construction leaders at all levels. Learn how a culture of caring and wellbeing can reduce the serious risks of substance misuse and suicide. Learn what you and your company can do to help promote mental wellbeing and reduce the risk of suicide among your workforce and our industry.

How to Talk to Workers About Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
The session focuses on when AND how to talk to construction workers about behavioral health. This will help your organization break the stigma around mental health. The session highlights specific opportunities to talk to construction workers about mental wellbeing, substance use disorders, Employee Assistance Program, and suicide prevention. The session includes an overview of the LEARN Saves Lives® model for engaging workers in discussion around suicide prevention.
